Warren Buffet and Blogshares

Filed under: Blogshares — Tim @ 12:28 pm

Okay, one more post about Blogshares. I logged onto the BS system thinking that all the decent stock had been snarfed up, well, it was — but there are a few crumbs people missed. Before I get to those however, I wanted to mention Warren Buffet.

He’s one of the wealthiest (on paper) individuals on the planet who refused to invest much of his portfolio in tech stocks (like Cisco or Microsoft) — and was ridiculed before the bust. In fact, he invests just the bare minimum (in several large tech companies) in order to get the Quarterly and Annual reports, but nothing even close to 1% that he does with Coca-Cola or Gillette.

Anyways, what I invested $7000 in was nothing fancy. But what they all have in common is: multiple incoming links (some of the blogs have more incoming than outgoing). Plus, I bought them when both their price/share and P/E was very low, so no matter what, even if it takes several weeks (or months), I will make a bit of that fake digital green stuff. Note: neutral P/E in blogshares is not 1, but closer to 10 (or 3.4 in the old system) or so — that is a good thing to know when investing because you are safe up through the 4’s and 5’s, the price resets after it hits 20 or so (usually before then).

In no particular order, the Tim Swanson Portfolio of Doom (don’t even start with me Ms. Cheyenne, you wealthy zillionaire… where is your link and account?):

Otakublog; Aggieblog; Bevoblog; Latitudinarian; Anarchoblog; gnublog; Movementarian; Tim Swanson; AllYourBlog; DrPersonal; The Ultimate Insult; ElS life; Captain Vulture; Outwardly Normal 2; Alaska Living! Wow! This is So Cool! (that really is the name); Webgeek Olympics; Scott Loftesness; Another Greenflame Page; Wis[s]eWords; Viral Planet; Sensible Erection (no comment); IsThatLegal?; and someone donated Chicago Blogs to me again (just 1 share too, go figure).

As you can tell by the names the world will bow before me very soon. I’m going to sell cheap polyster rugs so that when you bow before me, your knees won’t hurt as much (of course if you dream of me then all is good).

Bowing yet?

Anti-Nuclear Parody Playing Cards

Filed under: Fun and Games — Tim @ 5:09 am

You know the ‘Deck of Doom,’ the 55-cards that depict various Iraqis (like Saddam)? Well, although I’m no fan of the organization myself, GreenPeace put together an Anti-Nuclear proliferation deck. They handed out 600 decks to delegates attending a conference regarding the 1968 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. And as you might have guessed, they replaced the various Iraqis with infamous politicians: Bush, Blaire, Chirac, Putin, etc. (here they are - pdf)

Additionally, the number 128,000 stuck out — it’s the amount of nuclear weapons that have been built worldwide since 1945 (America has an arsenal of 10,000+). Note: there have been approximately 2000 nuclear detonations since the ‘Trinity‘ test in New Mexico.

Honda Ad and Gibson Interview

Filed under: Odds and Ends — Tim @ 3:36 am

A friend of mine showed me this Rube Goldberg-esque Honda ad. It’s pretty cool as it appears every part of the car is somehow used in a long train of ‘Dominoes’ to get something simple accomplished: turn-on a fully assembled Accord (it’s a funky looking car too).

By the way, a Rube Goldberg Machine is an ultra complex system/machine that is built to complete something simple (you’ve seen them before in ads and movies). There is a really fun computer game called The Incredible Machine (a bunch of add-ons and sequels too). If you have kids - they’ll love it, if you are a kid - you’ll love it, if you wish you were a kid - you’ll love it.

And I came across this William Gibson interview at The Guardian. He talks about blogs, his use of blogs and overall paints them in a positive light (versus Orlowski). Nothing profound though, but it’s cool to see a sci-fi buff like him discuss what could (and most probably will) usher in some of the things he’s talked about in the past (with the Semantic Web included in that).

Blogshares Premium

To celebrate the new found wealth I mentioned in my last post, I created 2 more icons (bringing the total to 5 now). Feel free to ’steal’ them, just remember to host them on your server:

And yes, I got rid of the tacky dollar sign, it doesn’t look proper. Additionally, you can get a bunch more at GTMcKnight’s Nucleus powered blog.

Note: I have no clue why the bottom one looks like crap, if you goto my front page, on the right side, it looks perfectly fine — here is the image source, when viewed seperately it looks normal: http://tim.movementarian.com/archives/bslisted3.gif
