Abu Dhabi-based construction firm to buy, renovate New Orleans
United Emirates (AP) - During a press conference yesterday, international construction conglomerate Jumelrah announced that the purchase of the weather-stricken city, New Orleans, cleared the final hurdle of federal oversight. While it was approved by the US Department of Commerce, several organizational details proposed by the Department of Transportation and the Housing and Urban Development agency have also entered the last phase before the handover is completed.
Jumelrah, which is famous for undertaking engineering feats such as the Burj al-Arab, the largest hotel in the world, unveiled a draft master plan for the city. Highlights include the erection of the worlds largest minarets along what is now Canal Street and an exact replica of the Taj Mahal along the French Corridor, ending just north of Bourbon Street.
Several firms within the small Middle Eastern sheikdom and capitol city have recently made headlines for most notably, the controversial bid to own and operate large sea ports along the eastern coast of the United States. Ray Nagin, the current mayor of New Orleans had no comment as of press time.
