Today, ArsTechnica has an interesting write-up on the evolving state of laser technology at the nano level. The long and the short, new materials allow next-generation lasers to switch on and off at rate of 100 GHz, which ultimately means a substantially larger amount of data can be moved through existing infrastructure.
Tangentially, this fits in with Roland Piquepaille’s post today on the development of semiconductor-based light detectors which can now be “painted” onto electronic devices.
Addendum: obligatory YouTube clip of sharks with laser beams attached to their heads.
Is it ethically wrong for me to really really like this techno Ted Stevens song? Brilliant.
